PERFECT STEAK IN 6 STEPS

Context
For a class project, I designed a six-step instructional guide on an 11x17 folded paper layout. I chose to teach how to cook the perfect steak while exploring a new illustration style inspired by mid-century modern art. The assignment emphasized minimal text and strong visuals, so the focus was on storytelling through illustration.

Challenges
The main challenge was authentically capturing the mid-century modern style while working digitally. I also had to simplify a full recipe into six clear, evenly divided steps while keeping the layout visually engaging and easy to follow. Typography and hierarchy needed to support the illustrations without overwhelming them.

Process
I began by researching mid-century design and identifying key traits like bright contrasting colors, playful shapes, and a hand-drawn feel. From there, I broke the recipe into six simple steps and sketched concepts for each panel. I chose a decorative script for headings and a high-contrast sans serif for subheads and body text to reflect the style of the era. The final design used bold illustrations, clear hierarchy, and strong flow across panels.
